Supporting Nauruan Athletes: New Funding to Drive Excellence and Promote National Health
A government initiative to empower coaches and athletes, fueling sport development and wellbeing in Nauru
Minister for Sports Jesse Jeremiah has announced a significant investment aimed at shaping the future of sports in Nauru. The introduction of the Coaches and Athletes Special Allowance (CASA) will offer structured financial support to recognize dedication, hard work, and achievements in athletics.
Jeremiah highlighted that Nauru has celebrated champions who have proudly represented the nation in events such as the Micronesian Games, Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, and even on the Olympic stage. Behind every achievement is the unwavering commitment of coaches and athletes who often work tirelessly despite limited resources.
By formally supporting these sports professionals, the government aims to foster continued ambition and nurture future generations of athletes. President David Adeang emphasized that this effort aligns with the government's vision of establishing a strong, sustainable, and world-class sports system in Nauru.
Beyond athletic success, President Adeang noted that investing in sports is also a vital strategy for creating a healthier nation. Promoting greater participation in physical activities addresses lifestyle changes required to reduce noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular conditions and diabetes.
He expressed pride in recent records for Nauruan participation in regional competitions and hopes that the CASA program will inspire even more individuals to engage in sports. The program will operate under clear policies and contracts, encouraging discipline, motivation, and accountability as essential pathways to success.
Nauru is preparing to host the Micronesia Games and has launched a sports modernization plan that includes the construction of a new sports stadium. This infrastructure will be complemented by new training areas, athlete housing, and improved transportation options.
According to the President, these investments not only enhance athletic performance but also contribute to building a lasting legacy. "We are focusing on building infrastructure that improves performance, but more importantly, the government's priorities are centered on developing people," he said.
This initiative represents a comprehensive effort to elevate Nauruan sport and health, ensuring lasting benefits for both athletes and the wider community.
